In the Kabbalistic universe of Briah, Binah is the third sephira in the tree of life. It is also the eighth gate. Binah, a feminine sephira, is translated as “Understanding.” It is paired with Chochmah, the second and male sephira, with Binah as “mother or Ima” and Chochmah as “father or Abba”; also identified intellectually as the right and left brain and according to Zohar, “two companions that never separate.”(See Sephirot)
