Alchemy
A philosophy with roots in science dating to early Egypt (5000 BCE), alchemy is considered the forerunner to modern day chemistry. In the Middle Ages, alchemists used their scientific knowledge in attempts to transmute organic and inorganic substances from one form to another (i.e. iron to gold). During this time, alchemy also became associated with the metaphysical world, its transmutations viewed as metaphors for spiritual transformation; beliefs that would have been considered heresy during the Inquisition and therefore hidden in this science. Alchemical symbols and hermetic writing obscured much of the information associated with the practice.
