 How to Overcome the Fear of Aging to Live Your Best Life Pt 1

Aging … the lucky get to do it.

We have all kinds of feelings about getting older. Depending on our age, we might feel excited about it. Turning 16 is so special!

As time passes, we also might feel scared about what aging means for our future. Some of us keep our blinders on and don’t think much about it, while others obsess about every little wrinkle starting at age 22. I’ve often heard younger people say to someone older, “It’s just a number.”

The numbers get bigger, the years go by, and we cross certain thresholds. Noticing certain changes in our bodies, changes in our relationships, and changes in our different capacities might give us pause.

Also, it’s understandable that in our youth obsessed society we might have mixed feelings about aging. For many reasons beyond just our health, it can seem important to stay and appear as youthful as possible. Society might tell us we need to appear younger in order to move ahead at work, keep our spouses happy, or to stay vital and relevant. If we listen to all the anti-aging marketing messages, that might mean purchasing the latest face creams, requiring the newest laser treatments, or even having plastic surgery. We can do our best to take care of ourselves and also learn to embrace what is.

At the end of the day, none of us lives forever. So, the willingness to face your thoughts and feelings around the inevitability of dying can be so healing and helpful. Also, examining your spiritual beliefs about death and what you think exists beyond this life can help give a larger view leading to more clarity and peace.

The good news is that aging has its gifts, as well as its challenges.

As we age, we may be asked to let go of different aspects of living, while at the same time we gain others. We seem to gain the most when we willingly embrace life’s challenges.

In order to have some perspective, we can choose to learn about ourselves and increase our awareness by exploring other dimensions of consciousness. We can grow to appreciate ourselves and others not just by focusing on the physical body, but also on our emotions, thoughts, and spiritual connections.

operating in us. As we become more conscious and aware, we enjoy greater aliveness and vitality in our lives. We can move into deeper and more fulfilling aspects that can help us know we are so much more than our bodies.
