We’ve all been stuck in indecision at some point in our lives. Maybe you were faced with a major life decision, like choosing a new career, moving across the country, or committing to a romantic partner. Or perhaps you’ve hesitated to make a smaller decision, like choosing a vacation destination, the quickest route to work in the morning, or even which desert to enjoy after dinner.

Sometimes we can feel so afraid to choose, we get stuck in our indecision, unable to move forward and terrified we’ll make a mistake. Our holding pattern creates a lot of frustration, anxiety and stress for us, making it even more difficult to think clearly.

If you feel you just can’t make a decision, you’re very likely out of tune with yourself. It’s time to check in and realign with your highest and deepest wisdom. From that space of internal connection, you have the information and wisdom you need to make the best possible choice in that moment. Here are 5 ways to check in, find clarity, and break through the cycle of indecision.

1. Meditate on it.

When we feel anxious, our minds race like a hamster on its wheel. When we’re in that agitated state, it’s difficult to access any guidance that might be available to us. Meditation can be an effective method of relaxing, sometimes letting go of scattered thinking, and allowing yourself to tune in to your Highest Self. Even if you’re a novice, you can take a few minutes to relax and go within. Just close your eyes, breathe deeply, and let your body relax. Follow your breath as you inhale, then exhale, several times. Let go as best you can of the churning thoughts that keep you stuck and allow yourself to drop down inwardly. Listen for any information coming your way. When you’re ready, take a deep breath and open your eyes. Write down whatever thoughts or images you may have had about your situation. You may not find “the answer” immediately, but with practice your chattering “monkey mind” will slow down and your true wisdom will rise to the surface and provide you the guidance you need.

2. Take any step.

Any step is a step away from where you are now. A client of mine could not decide whether to keep her job or go back to school. Each had very strong pros and cons. She vascilated for some time until she realized that if she took an action, any action, it would move her away from her stuck position. So she took the first steps to apply for financial aid, just to see how it went. As she completed her paperwork and made an appointment to meet with a counselor, she found herself excited, anticipating the next step toward completing her education. Taking an action, even one she wasn’t sure of made a difference for her.

When you’re faced with several options that feel equally valid, move in any of those directions. The movement alone will free you up, allowing you to feel what’s the next best thing. If the direction doesn’t feel right, you’ll soon know and can change direction at any time.

Have you been stuck in indecision? What worked for you? Please leave your comments; they make a real difference for all of us!
