From the Giggling Buddha Series: 10 Ways to Know You’re Not Present in the Moment

Part of our spiritual journey is to practice being in the moment. For most of us, even when we try our best we find ourselves in funny or even ridiculous situations because of our distracted minds. Here are 9 ways to tell when you’re not right here, right now:

  1. While chatting with a friend on your cell phone, you wander around your house looking for your cell phone.
  2. You make yourself a nice hot cup of coffee, and set it down on your desk, next to the other nice hot cup of coffee.
  3. Someone asks you, “How’ve you been?” You wave at them and respond, “You, too.”
  4. You’ve overshot your exit by 3 miles because of singing an old favorite song on the radio.
  5. You send the same email, twice, in five minutes.
  6. While meditating, you catch yourself thinking about the choice of pizza toppings, for the whole 30 minutes.
  7. You noticed that people were looking at you a little strangely and come to realize you’ve applied make up to only one eye.
  8. Your boss is talking, and you count the number of times they use pronouns.
  9. You text a friend telling them your true feelings about your boss, and suddenly realize you’ve texted your boss.
  10. You get on the elevator at the office look down and notice you have on one blue shoe and one black.

I love to hear about how you might have found yourself in silly situations because you weren’t right here, right now. Your comments make a difference for us all.
